February
17, 2011 IPJN Conference Call Notes
Attendees: Carl
from Indy, Fran from Indy, Linda Greene from Bloomington, Sheila & Frank
from West Lafayette and Linda from IUPUI.
Fran and Carl gave a report on the Pax Christi group that
formed in Indy in 2010. The group is taking its time getting to know each other
and had a presentation recently on the Indiana immigration bill that is very
similar to the one passed in Arizona. The group also is interested in
non-violence training and consensus building.
Midwest Summit:
Bill Ayers has been confirmed as the keynote speaker
at 7pm on Saturday March 26th at the IUPUI Campus Center Auditorium.
Students would like to plan an action on IUPUI campus on
Friday March 25th
Publicity: Erin is helping with media publicity.
Outreach to other community and campus groups is taking place and all of us
should try to help with publicity. Student contacts can be sent to Linda at: lmusavi@iupui.edu.
Plenary session: “Hot topics: What we can learn from
recent events in Egypt” or “What ongoing non-violent revolution in the world
means for activist in the United States” are the themes we came up with.
An IUPUI Egyptian student will be asked to
speak to start things off. We could have two or three other speakers including:
a speaker on the current Indiana immigration legislation that is like the one
in Arizona ( possibly a speaker from Pax Christi); proposals to dismantle
government services and attacks on working people; and Fran to speak about the Indiana
drones and his action proposal.
Food: We will solicit donations of food for during
the day and for the dinner. Sheila has agreed to coordinate the daytime
food. Another person from Indy would be
helpful to work on this. In the past we have gotten day old products from
Einstein’s Bagels, Panera Bread and other places. Anyone who can help should
contact Sheila at rosefam2856@gmail.com
or (765) 463-4705 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting (765) 463-4705 end_of_the_skype_highlighting. We won’t have kitchen space but plan to bring food that can
be eaten or kept cold and that is simple but nourishing. Ideas for now include:
bagels, fruit, and pastries.
Next Call: I would like to propose we have another conference call the week of
March 7th. I hope we can get more people on the call. Please let me
know which days: March 7, 8, 9 or 10 would be good for you.

IPJN Annual Meeting Notes
September 11, 2010
Notetakers: Erin Polley & Lori Perdue
In attendance
Dave Lambert, Kathryn Hessler, Alma Rising-Moore, Frank Rosenthal,
JoAnne Lingle, Sheila Rosenthal, Susan Dinnin, Jim Wolfe, Lori Perdue,
Carl Rising-Moore, Jennifer Cobb, Erin Polley, Anne McLaughlin, Val
& Ed Fillenwarth, Jack Kaufman-McKivigan, Linda Musavi
Icebreaker
Dave Lambert led is into a Values Clarification exercise where we were
asked to rank individuals in a story by who was ‘least offensive”. The
exercise forced the group to think about issues of morality and to
learn about the value sets of each of the members. Some of us used
Quaker consensus to decide how to rank and others chose not to rank the
individuals at all.
IPJN Structure & Roles
• Sheila gave us a brief history of IPJN: the first meeting was in
2002. Folks in Lafayette got to know Tom Healy (publisher of Branches)
who was compiling a directory of peace groups around the state. Have
participated in the Midwest Peace and Justice Summit.
· Sheila identified roles that need to be filled in the network and
that these individuals would serve as the coordinating body:
o Treasurer to maintain bank account, collect dues of $25/yr.organization, fundraising, dispense funds as needed (Sheila)
o Website upkeep via Microsoft Office Live , add new content and
remove outdated content, stay in touch with member groups to ensure
they are sharing content on the website
o Conference call coordinator to organize scheduled meetings and send out notices (Erin)
o Network4peace contact person to maintain events on site and encourage members to post content on the website
o Maintain contact with individuals and organization in different
parts of the state in a variety of formats; keep communication going in
both directions
o Midwest Peace and Justice Summit liason to keep IPJN a part of organizing event (Erin, Jennifer)
· Carl brought up that he thought the Network could facilitate some
statewide non-violence trainings- could be used as a tactic. Carl could
head up a working group on non-violence.
· Sheila reported on Network4peace, a national network of state
peace and justice groups that has a site that allows us to post events,
announcements, blogs, photos and a directory of state organizations.
IPJN upkeeps the actions on the site and adds calendar items.
· The IPJN website (ipjn.org<http://ipjn.org>), is a place where visitors can see a directory of Indiana groups, event listings, blog posts and photos from events.
· Current mission statement reads: The Indiana Peace & Justice
Network (IPJN) is a grassroots coalition of peace and social justice
activists and supporters from throughout the state of Indiana. Through
our official website and discussion list IPJN provides Hoosier
peacemakers a place in which to share ideas, strategies, resources and
working tools to help build a more peaceful and just world, on both the
local and national level. You can learn more about us at: <http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ipjn> http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ipjn.
IPJN was founded at a meeting in West Lafayette in the fall of 2002
where about 30 people from around the state met for the first time. We
hope to serve the broader peace and justice community by:
1) Coordinating state-wide events
2) Sharing information and resources
3) Mobilizing Indiana residents for regional and national events
• Jennifer Cobb agreed to look into if there is a need for IPJN to
incorporate or become a 501c3. JoAnne pointed out that she has a strong
personal disagreement to paying the state to be an organizing entity.
Hotel Workers Rights- Stuart Mora from UNITE!
Stuart gave us an update on the struggle to unionize workers at the
Hyatt Downtown Indianapolis. He informed us of the boycott on the hotel
and gave us ways to be involved.
Best Practices
• Put in facetime with people you are organizing with-don’t just
rely on email or facebook. Try to meet people in person to make that
personal contact.
· “1-2 Punch”- remind people in various ways about events to get them there.
· Having regular meetings that people can depend on happening-same time, same place.
· Having regular actions to continue “facetime”.
· Research says you should meet every other week.
· Combine speaker or film with the meeting
· Bring someone in from another group to talk about their group is a good way to expand meeting attendance.
· “Get on the bus” –do the work that is already happening, support other organizations when possible.
· Having meetings is important to building and maintaining relationships.
· You’ve got to give people something TO DO. Don’t just sermonize and philosophize in meetings.
· Set small victories for yourself as an activist or your group.
· Follow the lead of the people you serve. Take time to serve the people you want to “help”.
· We need to have a vision for what we want without being too results driven.
· What doesn’t work: marches don’t always go over well in Indy,
attracting students in college towns (they want to have their own
organizations)
· Do actions that are creative and make a subversive point.
· You have to be in a relationship with students/young people
first. Do something to support them, then let them know how you can
help them.
· Remember the relationship with yourself and do things to follow your passion and interest.
Strategy session
Erin led us into an exercise from the Midwest Academy about how to
strategize around issues. We used IPJN organizing as an example.
• Issues: Anti-war work, social justice, judicial
· Opportunities: use better language when talking about our issues,
remember “people”, the IPJN website, the IPJC journal, Jim’s Peace and
Justice Feature, mobilizations, yahoo group, bridge issues together,
discuss economics
· Challenges: “culture of the middle”, distance from each other,
facebook and social networking, military industrial complex, the media,
efficiency, reacting to the news rather than having long range goals,
yahoo group
· Audience: change seekers, youth + students, progressive orgs, disenfranchised
· Tactics: non-violence trainings, banner drops, education around
Islamaphobia/Hate, mobilizations, advocacy, legislative/lobbying,
teach-ins, debates
IPJN Work Areas Identified:
• COMMUNICATION (website, calendar, media outreach, internal communication)-
Jim, Lori,Dave, Frank
· MOBILIZATION (events)- Erin, Sheila, Jennifer, Lori
· OUTREACH (non-violence trainings, updates to network)- Carl, Dave, Jeff, Lori
